Chapter 17: The Rink
I showed Jens the text at the next red light.
He read it and handed the phone back.
"No," he said.
"I didn't ask."
"You were going to." The light turned green. He didn't move. "Alone. With her. After the dining table and the clerk's counter and the press conference."
"She's my sister."
"She's your sister with your signature."
The car behind us honked.
He drove.
"I'm not allowed to drive," I said. "So you'll take me."
"I'll take you."
"And you'll stay in the truck."
He breathed out through his nose for a whole block.
"I'll stay in the truck," he said. "At the far end of the lot. With the engine running. And if you wave, I'm coming."
"I won't wave."
"I'll come anyway if I feel like it."
Marit picked the place.
The old outdoor rink below Canal Park, by the lake.
Our mother used to drive us down from Two Harbors on Saturdays in a car with no heat, two thermoses of cocoa and our skates tied together by the laces.
We skated there every winter until we were fourteen.
