Chapter 19: Corrected
On Thursday afternoon I signed my name to a page that said I was wrong, and it took only a moment.
The principal had set up three chairs and a speakerphone in her office.
Delaney sat in one, with her mother beside her in a cleaning-company jacket, the only other person I had ever seen wear one like my mother's.
"This is the corrected record," the principal said. "The suspension is withdrawn. The report is voided. The reason on file will read, 'Complaint made in error on false evidence supplied by another student.'"
She slid the page across the desk.
Delaney's mother read it twice with her finger under the words.
Then she looked up at me.
"You signed this," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"You signed the other one, too."
"Yes."
I made myself hold her eyes.
She had gray in her hair and a cracked thumbnail, and she looked at me for a very long time.
"My daughter didn't speak to me for a week after that," she said. "She sat in the car in the driveway. I sold the car."
"I'm sorry."
"I know you are." She folded the page and put it in her purse. "It's not enough. It's what there is."
"Yes, ma'am."
The speakerphone crackled, and a man's voice said, "Is everyone there?"
He was the swim coach.
"I've read the new record," he said. "I wrote the state office this morning. Delaney, I told them what happened."
"Thank you, Coach."
"The offer was for the fall, and the window shut in April. They can't hold a spot open because we were wrong." He sounded as if his throat hurt. "I'm sorry. I should have asked you. I was told the key was in your bag, and I never asked you."
