Chapter 14: The Clinic
Pier Nine at three in the morning looked like a drowned church.
The bleachers stood dark.
The sand had been raked flat.
One work lamp burned over the tunnel where I had walked out in a torn dress.
Doyle and I came in by the water side, along the pilings, with the tide slapping rusted steel under our feet.
He moved slowly because of the leg, and he moved quietly in spite of it.
"You don't need to come," I said.
"I carry his pills, miss." His breath smoked in the cold. "I've carried the wrong ones for four months. I'll carry the right ones."
The door was where the doctor said it would be, behind a stack of rotted crates, painted the same gray as the wall.
I put the tarnished key in the lock.
It turned.
I thought about that for a moment, and then I pushed the door open anyway.
A corridor ran inward, lit green.
Cots stood in a row along one wall, stripped and empty. The freed fighters had taken their blankets and gone.
