Chapter 4: House Rules

The Creighton house sat on a stone cliff over the harbor, with iron gates and a hundred windows lit against the snow.

Doyle took me through a side door and up the back stairs, and nobody stopped him.

"Your room," he said, and opened a door on a bedroom with a fireplace and a bed the size of a boat.

A second door stood in the far wall.

"Where does that go?"

"His room."

I looked at Doyle.

"Fiancées sleep next to fiancés," Doyle said, as if he'd said it fifty times to himself. "The household talks, miss. Two doors is the least he could do."

The closet held clothes in my size, black, gray and dark green, with the tags still on.

Nobody had asked my size.

I found it unsettling how little I minded.

A nurse had been waiting in the bathroom.

She cleaned the torn skin on my forearm, wrapped it, and told me to ice it twice a day.

The bruise from the giant's fist was already purple to the wrist.

Doyle left a gun in the nightstand drawer, a small black Beretta with a full magazine.

I picked it up and checked the chamber.

It was loaded and clean.

Valentin Creighton had put a loaded gun in the room of a woman who had held a pin to his throat three hours before.

He either trusted me very much, or he didn't care if I used it.

Neither answer made me feel safe.

At seven o'clock he knocked on the connecting door.

He had changed into a charcoal shirt with the sleeves rolled, and a square of white gauze sat taped to his neck where my pin had gone in.

"Dinner," he said. "My family eats at eight. They've been told you are my fiancée, that we met in the spring, and that you were abroad until last week."
