Chapter 6: Paid in Full

I found him in his study at midnight, standing at the window with his back to me.

I didn't knock.

"Eight hundred thousand," I said. "He paid eight hundred thousand dollars to put me in a cage."

Valentin didn't turn around.

"Doyle told you."

"Doyle told me I'm worth eight hundred thousand. I want Tobias. Tonight."

"No."

"Give me an address."

"Nina."

"I was going to marry him." My voice cracked on the last word, and I hated it. "I picked out the napkins with him. I let him sleep in my bed for two years."

Valentin turned.

He had taken his tie off. The gauze was gone from his neck, and a small red mark sat where my pin had been.

"You'd kill him tonight," he said. "In a hotel, with his hands still in splints. And Calvin would call the police on you before breakfast."

"I don't care."

"I do."

He crossed the room slowly and stopped a foot from me.

"Tobias goes down in public," he said. "At a party, with everyone watching, with everything he owns in other people's hands. That's what you want. Not a quiet corpse."

I stared at him.

He was right, and that made me angrier.

That was not the only thing burning in me.

I had wanted his mouth again since the gym, and the contract had nothing to do with it.

I shoved him, flat-handed, in the chest.

He took it.

I shoved him again, harder.

He caught both my wrists and walked me back until the edge of his desk hit the backs of my thighs.

"Hit me again," he said, low.

"I will."

"Do it."

I didn't hit him.

I took his collar in my fists and pulled his mouth down onto mine.

He made a rough sound in his throat that went straight through me.

I was twenty-eight, he was thirty-four, and neither of us was pretending this was for the contract.
