Chapter 12: Fired

"Be my doctor," I said.

"All right." He drew a slow breath. "Then I'll say it as a doctor. A man who leaves in the middle of a heartbeat for a text will leave in the middle of a labor for a phone call. Your husband is not safe for you."

"I know."

"You'd be raising that child alone inside a marriage."

"I know that too."

"Good." He stood and put his hands in his coat pockets. "I'll see you in four weeks."

"No, you won't."

He frowned.

"I transferred my chart yesterday," I said. "To your partner, down the hall."

He went very still.

"She's excellent," he said carefully. "Did I do something?"

"No."

"Then why?"

"Because you made a rule. No hands while you're my doctor."

I watched him understand.

It took a long moment, and I saw it go across his whole face.

"Calla," he said. "You're ten weeks pregnant. With another man's child. And your husband is currently in a stairwell holding another woman's hand."

"I know who my husband is."

"You shouldn't want me. I'm the man who just watched a heartbeat with you."

"I'm pregnant, Cormac," I said. "I'm not broken."

It was the first time I had said his first name.

He stood in his own clinic with his shoulders very straight, and I walked up and put my hand flat on his chest.

His heart was going hard under my palm.
