Chapter 13: The Invitation

On Monday morning I sat across Cormac's desk while he looked at the logo I drew on a prescription pad.

It was a small green sprig, and I drew it badly.

"Birchline Diagnostics," he said at once. "Waukesha. I send them samples twice a month."

He dialed the number on his desk phone and put it on speaker.

The director of the lab came on the line, and Cormac told her only what she needed: a kinship letter, fourteen months old, on her paper, for a woman named Chelsea Dorsey.

Keys clicked on her end.

"We never ran that case," the director said. "There's no report under that name, and the number you read me is in a format we stopped using before then."

"Could it be a forgery?" Cormac asked.

"Our letterhead went out in a box of samples at a trade show, two hundred sheets." She sounded unhappy. "Anyone could have taken some."

"Could you put that in writing?"

"Signed, on our paper, by Friday."

He hung up and looked at me.

"There never was a second test," he said.

"There was a letter," I said. "And my brother has been guarding it for fourteen months."

My phone buzzed against the desk.

It was Ansel.

I let it ring twice, and then I answered in my flattest voice.

He asked me to dinner on Wednesday, only the two of us.

I said yes, because I wanted to see what he would do with me alone.
