Chapter 14: The Hallway Tape
I was across the street before Chadwick had shut his car door.
The gray sedan's window slid down four inches.
"Mrs. Higginson." Lacey's voice was sweet and small. "I was only passing."
"In Newton, at ten at night, with a camera."
"My aunt lives nearby."
"Your aunt with the dried shrimp?"
Her smile didn't move.
Chadwick came up beside me and put one hand flat on the roof of her car.
"You're on leave," he said. "You have no business near this house."
"I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't want to intrude." She looked up at him with her wide brown eyes. "I only wanted to see that you were safe."
"Drive."
"Yes, sir."
The window closed.
The sedan pulled away with its lights off until the corner.
"She has pictures," Chadwick said.
"Of you on my father's porch, reading a letter."
"What can she do with that?"
"I don't know yet."
I found out at 8:40 the next morning.
The lobby of the Higginson tower was full.
Ninety people stood under the atrium glass with their coffee, because the Friday town hall started at nine, and the whole company came down for it.
Lacey stood on the second step of the grand staircase, in a pale blue blouse, with her phone in both hands and a small speaker beside her foot.
Chadwick and I came through the revolving door together.
She saw us and began to cry.
"Mr. Higginson, Mrs. Higginson, please forgive me. I didn't want to do this here."
Everyone turned.
"I've been told I'm a liar," she said, to the room. "I've been put on leave, and told I'm a danger to this company, and I only want you to hear one thing before the board decides."
