Chapter 15: Nothing Left to Hold
The boardroom on the forty-third floor had a table for twenty and a view of nothing but cloud.
Eleven directors sat around it in dark suits.
Eleanor sat at the head with her cane across her knees and her olive-green coat still on.
At the foot stood a man in a gray three-piece with a leather folder, and he had been talking for six minutes.
"Mrs. Higginson holds a seat on the Foundation board and a bedroom down the hall from the CEO," he said. "She entrapped an employee, by her own admission, in front of ninety witnesses. My client asks that she be recused from every vote touching Higginson Holdings."
"Your client," said Eleanor, "would like a great many things."
"Mrs. Higginson." He turned to me. "Do you deny it?"
"No."
"Then you concede a conflict."
"I concede I'm a Higginson by marriage," I said, "and a debtor by contract. Those are the two conflicts anyone at this table could name."
Nobody laughed.
I looked straight down the table at my husband.
"Mr. Higginson, my family owes your company thirty-eight million dollars. If I'm a danger to Higginson Holdings, take the debt out of it."
Chadwick had been sitting very still.
He looked at the lawyer, and at the directors, and then at me.
"You want me to forgive the note," he said.
"I want you to sign it over to me. All of it, not through the company. From you."
A director cleared his throat.
"Chadwick, the debt is a company asset. You'd be giving away..."
"Thirty-eight million dollars," said Chadwick. "I know the figure."
"It comes out of your trust," said Eleanor, pleasantly. "I signed the trust. I'm in favor."
"You can't be in favor, you're chairing."
"Then I'm chairing in favor."
