Chapter 6: What I'd Have Said
Chadwick's office had a view of the whole harbor, and none of us looked at it.
Eleanor sat in the leather chair by the window with her cane across her knees.
I stood by the door.
Lacey stood in the middle of the carpet, in a cream cardigan, with her hands folded in front of her.
"Play it," Eleanor said.
Chadwick's wall screen lit up with stairwell B.
He watched the small figure in the pale blue blouse put down a lunch box, tear a packet, and shake it in.
He watched her press down the lid.
When it was over, nobody spoke.
"Lacey," Chadwick said.
"Sir." Her voice wobbled. "It was sea salt. From my own lunch. I thought Mrs. Higginson might like a little on her chicken, because she always says the Foundation kitchen under-seasons, and I..."
"It was shrimp," I said, "dried shrimp."
She looked at me with enormous wet eyes.
"I didn't know. I swear I didn't. It was in a little bag, my aunt gave me, I thought it was salt..."
Chadwick didn't move.
"You've ordered Eileen's lunch for two years," he said. "Her allergy is in the first line of your file."
"I forgot."
"You forgot."
"I was nervous, sir. After the weekend. I couldn't think straight."
Eleanor made a small noise in her throat.
"Chadwick," she said. "Ask your wife a question."
He turned his head slowly.
"Why didn't you bring this to me?" he said. "You asked for the footage. You went to my grandmother, and you went around me. I was in the building."
His voice was level, but I heard what was under it.
