Chapter 10: Family Night

The Ironbacks' Family Night at Ostrowski's Ice had been on the calendar since June.

Every year the team came to my grandmother's rink on the Tuesday before the first home stand, and handed out free skates to forty kids.

The owner's wife cut the ribbon. A local station sent a camera.

Nobody had thought to cancel it.

"Cancel it, and they win the story," the lawyer said on the phone that afternoon. "Hold it. Smile at the kids. Do not say one word about the contract into any microphone."

So at six o'clock I stood on my grandmother's ice in the rink jacket with forty children's hands in mine and watched my ex-fiancé walk through the side door in a team blazer.

He did not look at me.

The owner came in behind him, a stooped man in a camel coat with a Florida tan.

Brady's agent trailed them, and then Cassidy, in white.

She had her phone raised before she was through the door.

Soren came out last, at the far end of the ice.

The kids saw him and stopped skating to stare.

He took off his blazer and handed it to a rink assistant, rolled his sleeves to the elbow, and bent down until a five-year-old could put a mitten against his forearm.

"Is it true you're the biggest one?" the five-year-old asked.

"On the whole team."

"Can you pick me up?"

"Can you hold on?"

She shrieked with joy as he lifted her to his shoulders.
