Chapter 21: The Trade

On Sunday morning the rink was empty and the ice was fresh from the Zamboni.

I was sitting on the bottom bench in my coat, lacing a pair of skates I did not plan to use.

The side door opened and Soren came in.

He had no hood now, and no team jacket.

He carried a single folded sheet of paper in his good hand.

"The offer came by email," he said. "My agent printed it."

"I figured."

"They want me in Minneapolis by Tuesday. It's a good team."

"It is."

"Better than the one I've got."

"I know."

He sat down on the bench next to me, with a foot of space between us.

I waited for him to ask me what to do.

He didn't.

"I'm not going to tell you to stay," I said.

"I didn't come for that."

"Good."

"I came to ask for something else."

I looked at him.

He turned the paper over in his hands.

"The terms I set in the truck," he said. "Nothing real, and no cameras on my face."

He turned the paper over.

"You already threw the first one back at me."

"I remember."

"I want to break the second one."

I did not understand him.

"I want you to film me."

"Soren."

"Hear me out."

"You walk out of every room I film in. You pulled a hood over your face at the game last night."

"I know what I said."

"Your sister."

"I know about my sister."

He drew a long breath.

"I talked to her last night, on her neighbor's phone in Oregon. I told her what I wanted to do."
