Chapter 21: Before the Lamp
Octavia's POV
Gran had always come in last, at eleven, when the stair was full.
We had twenty minutes before that, and neither of us wasted a second of them.
The Lucia lay in the lee of the point with her engine off and her lamps dark.
The dock above us was still full of guests.
In the forepeak the brass lamp swung on its hook and lit the narrow cabin in gold.
I stood in the middle of it with my back to him.
"Unhook me," I said.
He did it with fingers that shook.
I felt each hook let go down my spine.
Then I pushed the green bodice down and let it fall to my waist.
The emeralds lay cold against my bare breasts.
He made a sound behind me, short and helpless.
"Turn around," he said.
"No. You turn me."
He took my shoulders and turned me.
He looked.
Green fire lay across my collarbones, and below it, my skin was flushed and tight, with the nipples hard in the cool cabin air.
The silk bunched at my waist, creased where he had creased it.
"There's no one on this earth like you," he said.
"I'm aware."
His laugh cracked.
He sat on the edge of the port berth and pulled me between his knees.
He put his mouth on my breast.
He sucked the nipple into his mouth, hot and wet, and the stones swung against his jaw.
I bent over him, my hands in his hair, and moaned.
"Tiago. Hurry," I said.
"No," he said.
"I gave you an order."
"I know," he said, against my skin. "I'm going to be late for it."
I pulled his shirt up and over his head and threw it at the hatch.
My hands went down his bare chest, over the brass discs on their cord, and I scraped my nails across his stomach.
He hissed.
"Late," I said, "and sorry."
"Very sorry."
He licked from one breast to the other.
He kissed the hollow between them, and the cold chain slid across his lips, and he smiled into it.
His hand slid up my thigh under the bunched silk.
He found me bare and slick, and he made a rough sound against my skin.
"You came out like this," he said. "To a ball."
"I planned it."
"You planned all of it."
"Every minute," I said.
He pushed two fingers inside me, standing between his knees, and I gripped his shoulders.
