Chapter 8: The Wharf

Octavia's POV

I stepped off the Lucia onto the wharf in a man's oilskin, with salt in my hair and bare feet.

My family got out of a black car to meet me.

Lavinia came first, in a camel coat, with her pearls on at seven in the morning.

Then Crispin, in a quarter-zip, carrying a folder.

Then my cousin Beatrix, who everyone called Bea.

She stopped beside the car door and looked at the oilskin, and then at the boat, and then at me.

She was wearing my engagement ring.

She had put it on her right hand, where it flashed in the early light.

She turned the hand a little so I would see.

Behind me, twenty launch drivers stood along the wall with their arms folded.

None of them said anything.

Tiago stepped down beside me and stayed there.

"Octavia," Lavinia said. "You look dreadful."

"Good morning, Aunt."

"Come home. We'll say no more about the dinner. Your room is aired. Crispin has forgiven you."

"Has he?" I said.

"I have," Crispin said, with his reasonable smile. "I know you've been under strain, Tavi. The grief, the estate, all of it."

"He means it kindly," Bea said.

I looked at the ring.

She looked at me, sweetly, and I understood that she wanted me to say something.
