Chapter 15: The Last Text
He turned on the lamp.
I sat up against the headboard with the blanket around my shoulders.
Axel reached for his phone on the nightstand.
His thumb hovered over the screen for a long time.
"I never deleted it," he said. "I never could."
He held the phone out.
It was a text from a number I knew by heart, a landline that no longer existed.
The time stamp said 6:41 p.m., April 19.
I read it.
Axel, Kaisa will worry about my chest tonight.
It's nothing, it's the old thing.

The words blurred.
My father had never learned to type properly.
He wrote in capitals for anything he meant.
I could hear his voice in every line.
"Nine minutes later he fell in the kitchen," I said.
"I know."
"He knew it wasn't nothing."
