Chapter 24: Center Ice
By midnight the last car had left the lot.
The old man locked the front door behind him.
He handed me the ring of keys with a gruff, wet-eyed nod, and I stood alone in the dark arena.
The east sheet was empty.
The plant hummed under the floor.
I turned off every light but the bank over center ice.
Axel was already out there.
He sat on a pile of wool blankets in the middle of the circle, in his skates and his parka.
Two little electric heaters glowed on either side of him, and he held a thermos in his lap.
He looked up when I stepped onto the ice.
His smile did something to my heart.
"You brought a lot of blankets," I said.
"You said bring a blanket."
"I said a blanket."
"I panicked."
I skated out slowly, in the quiet, the blades hissing.
I stopped at the edge of the circle and stood over him.
He tipped his head back to look at me.
The light fell on his bare scalp, and the black beard, and the gentle face of a man who had stopped being afraid.
"Stand up," I said.
He stood.
I put my hands inside his parka and slid it off his shoulders.
It dropped on the blankets.
I pulled his sweater up over his head.
Then I unbuttoned his flannel shirt underneath, one button at a time, kissing the skin I uncovered.
He closed his eyes.
"Tonight's different," I said.
"I know."
"I'm not going to make you beg."
His eyes opened.
"You're not?"
"No," I said. "I'm going to ask you what you want. And then you're going to have it."
He swallowed.
"Anything?"
"Anything."
He looked at me for a long, long moment.
"I want to see you," he said, rough. "All of you. On this ice. With nothing between us."
