Chapter 8: Her Father's Rink
Skogen Ice Arena sat at the bottom of a hill in Duluth, with the lake behind it and a parking lot full of old snow.
It had been my father's rink for thirty-one years.
It was a hundred and fifty miles from Eagan, and Axel drove all of them on our one day off without being asked.
He pulled into the lot at noon and cut the engine.
For a while neither of us moved.
"I haven't been inside since the funeral," he said.
"You weren't at the funeral."
"I was in the back," he said. "In the parking lot. I never went in."
I looked at him.
The wind pushed at the truck.
"That's the second time you've told me something like that," I said.
"I know."
"One of these days I'm going to ask the whole thing."
"I'll tell you," he said. "When I can say it without wrecking this."
I got out of the truck.
The side door was held shut with a bungee cord, the way it had been for ten years.
The inside smelled of cold concrete and old popcorn.
Half the lights were off.
