Chapter 12: The One Who Carries the Bags

"You went alone," I said.

Nico stood in the middle of his study with the chart spread across the desk, and he didn't look sorry.

"I took two men."

"You left me in bed and drove two hours to meet my ex-fiancé on a dock."

"He took a pregnant woman out of my mother's house."

He kept his voice level.

"I wasn't going to drag you onto a dock for that."

Dario had sent Benedetta back at dusk, in his own car.

She was upstairs with Donna Livia now, and she hadn't said ten words.

"You should have."

"Giulia."

"We agreed no more lies about the dreams."

"I haven't lied."

"You've kept something back."

I put my palm flat on the chart, over the small red X.

"I can see it on you. What did you find?"

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he told me, flat and in order, and he left out nothing.

I listened with my hand pressed flat to the paper.

"He wants me dead," I said slowly.

"No." Nico's jaw set. "He wants you frightened. Frightened people do what they're told."

"The X is where the car goes in the harbor."

"Yes."

"That's my dream."

"I know." He reached across the desk and covered my hand with his.

"That's why the car's in my garage with two men on it."

"And I'll drive you to the cathedral myself, in another one."

I looked at his hand.

I remembered the night before, and all its heat, and for a moment I couldn't think of anything but that.
