Chapter 4: One Question

I had rehearsed a speech for the Don's study.

I had not rehearsed anything for Nico.

So I told him the truth.

"Six weeks ago I started dreaming things that hadn't happened yet."

His face didn't change.

"The first few were small. A spilled coffee, a flat tire, a phone call before it rang. I thought it was nerves."

"And the last one?"

"The last one was your brother."

I told him all of it, from the wedding to the boy in Dario's arms.

Nico listened to the whole thing without speaking.

When I mentioned the cuff link, his thumb moved over the silver D at his wrist.

It was a small movement.

I almost missed it.

"That's a very good story," he said, when I finished.

"It isn't a story."

"Giulia." He said my name carefully. "You caught my brother in a church because your assistant followed him. That's detective work. It's a good reason to be angry. It isn't a reason to tell me you can see the future."

"I knew her name before my assistant did."

"Did you?"

"I said Benedetta to my father on Saturday night. My assistant followed Dario's men on Sunday."

He studied me.

I let him.

"Fine," he said. "Give me something I can check."

I closed my eyes and reached for the second dream, the one I'd had last night.

"Thursday. The docks, pier nine. One of Dario's men will put a green tag on a crate in the third container from the gate. It's marked as machine parts."
