Chapter 15: The Fourth Shoe
The board secretary's office was on the fourth floor, behind a door that Geoffrey opened with his own key.
"My name, my key, my father's building," he said. "If anyone asks, I sent you."
He took the secretary to a conference room with a coffee tray and a long question about tour insurance.
I had four minutes.
The locked drawer under the window gave way to two dancer's hairpins and a steady wrist.
Inside was a thin blue folder marked Closed Session, Thursday.
I read it standing up.
The first item was a vote to accept the audit of the tour accounts, with the auditor's name left blank.
The second was a short line.
Replacement soloist for Giselle, if required: L. Garnier.
If required.
Victor was already counting on a vacancy.
The third page was Victor's own calendar for the week.
Wednesday, eleven at night, Marlowe fly gallery, one entry, one initial.
R.
I took out my phone and photographed every page.
Then I put the folder back, locked the drawer and walked down four flights of stairs with my heart in my throat.
I did not run.
Dancers do not run in a hallway, because people look.
