Chapter 18: The Fly Gallery
At ten forty that night, I lay flat on the catwalk above the stage with my cheek against cold steel.
Below me the Marlowe was dark except for one work light on the fly gallery, forty feet down and to my left.
The broker stood under it with his hands in his coat pockets.
Roxy sat at his feet with tape over her mouth and tape on her wrists, and she was looking straight up.
She could not see me.
She knew I was there anyway.
The two men in dark coats stood at either end of the gallery.
My father had walked that iron floor every day for fifteen years.
Section C of the rail ran right in front of Roxy, and I could see the worn bolts shine under the light.
Nobody had ever replaced them.
Alec came out of the wings at eleven exactly.
He walked slowly onto the empty stage with his hands visible and a small black drive held up between two fingers.
"Eleven," the broker called down pleasantly. "You always were punctual when you were afraid."
"Let her walk," Alec said.
"Of course. After the drive."
"After she's off the gallery."
