Chapter 24: Dance
We were married on Sunday afternoon, on the stage of the Marlowe, under a single work light.
The city clerk stood center in a navy coat with her folder open, and read the words without once looking up.
Roxy stood on my side in her black tee and a green skirt she had sewn herself that morning.
Geoffrey stood on Alec's side.
He had brought the emerald in a box.
I gave it back to him in front of everyone, and he laughed and put it in his pocket.
"It was always my mother's," he said. "Not yours."
"Keep it for someone you love."
"I'm working on that," he said.
Lena sat in the first row of the house with her mother's old shawl across her knees.
The director sat beside her, and behind them sat forty dancers in street clothes, in the dark theater, saying nothing.
The gallery rail overhead had been replaced that morning.
Roxy had checked every bolt herself.
Alec wore the same borrowed suit, with his left hand bare.
He had the missing fingertip, and I took that hand when the clerk said to.
"I do," he said, and his voice cracked on it, and the whole house heard.
"I do," I said, and mine did not.
