Chapter 24: Sunday Voicemail

Elliot didn't answer right away.

He lay on his back with the lamp on, looking at the ceiling.

I felt his chest rise and fall under my warm hand.

"Day one," he said at last. "I'd have said: I'm here, Margot. Go to sleep."

"That's all?"

"I'd have said it every Sunday." He turned his head. "Then, around day ninety, I'd have said: Please eat something that isn't toast."

I laughed into his shoulder.

"And by the end?"

"By the end I'd have been on a plane."

"Good answer."

"It's the true one. I checked it against the truck."

I stayed the night, and in the morning we ate cereal on the floor because he owned no chairs.

By Sunday I had a plan.

It was a stupid plan.

Aunt Bernie hosted dinner at her house at four, with a roast and a green bean casserole.

The tomato plant on the porch rail had put out its first yellow flower.

Elliot arrived at three-thirty with a store-bought pie and a box of dog biscuits.

Clancy forgave him instantly.

At five to four I put down the gravy boat and said, "I'm going to step out for a minute."

"Where to?" Bernie asked, not looking up.

"To make a call."

She gave me a long look over her glasses.

"Take your time," she said, and winked.

I went out the back door onto the step with my phone, shut the screen behind me, and dialed.
