Chapter 5: Hum It

On Friday I walked into the Eisenhart house in my aunt's green dress with Elliot's hand under my elbow.

The dining room held twenty-two people and four candelabras.

Lacey saw us first.

She crossed the room with both arms out, in a pale pink dress and her mother's pearls.

"Margot, you came!" She hugged me hard, and her cheek was wet. "I was so scared you wouldn't. I said to Spencer, she'll come, she's my person."

"I came," I said.

"And with Elliot!" She turned bright eyes up at him. "That's the sweetest thing."

"Hello, Lacey," Elliot said.

He said it politely and nothing else.

Diane drifted over and looked at the place cards in her hand.

"Margot, dear, we've put you at the end by the kitchen. It's easier for the caterers to reach you if you need anything."

"She's sitting by me," Elliot said.

"Elliot."

"Two seats from the head. Next to the Fossums." He moved my card and his own and set them down. "That's where family sits."

Diane stood very still for one second, and then she smiled at everyone behind us.

Dinner was roast lamb and a lot of toasts.

Lacey's father stood first, a big gray man with a loud voice, and said he had never been prouder to give a daughter to a family of such good names.

Everyone clapped.

Diane's chin rose a little at that.

Spencer sat at the head with Lacey beside him and his hand on her knee.

Twice I looked up and found him already looking at me.

Not at Lacey.

At me, with his mouth half open, ready to say something to my side of the table.
