Chapter 14: The London Ring
Avis took the card out of my hand and turned it over. The back was blank.
"Somebody's angry," she said.
"Somebody's English." I turned the box over. "Who sends a stranger a ring?"
"Everybody, lately. You're famous."
Gus came out of the jewelry shop in yesterday's jeans and no shoes, pulling a T-shirt over his head.
He saw his grandmother and stopped dead in the doorway.
"Morning, Gram."
"Morning, Gus Tibbetts."
"You never use my last name."
"I do when you come out of a door at a quarter to eight looking like that."

He held it up to the light. His whole face changed. He stopped being a man who'd just been caught and started being a jeweler.
"Emerald cut. Three carats, maybe more. Platinum." He turned it. "This is real money. Somebody's mortgage."
"Then why mail it to me?"
