Chapter 16: Front Street
Gus came through the doorway in his bare feet and stopped when the glass crunched.
"Don't move," he said.
"You don't move. You're the one with no shoes."
He went back for boots.
Then he lifted me out of the glass and set me down on the stairs.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Look at me. Are you hurt?"
"Gus. I'm fine. It's gone."
He looked at the empty velvet.
He didn't need me to say what had been on it.
"She didn't even take the veil," I said.
"She walked past four thousand dollars of china for the one thing with her name on it."
"We don't know it was her."
"We do. We just can't prove it."
He sat down on the step below me and put his head in his hands.
"I should've been down here," he said.
"You were asleep next door. That's where people are at two in the morning."
The trooper came at three and wrote things down.
He was polite and young and had never heard of Hatton Garden.
The diner's camera had caught a dark SUV going down Front Street at 2:04. No plate.
