Chapter 27: Mother's Things
Erik didn't touch the keys.
He looked at them on the table, and then at his father.
"You're giving me Mom's house," he said, "so you don't have to sit in it."
Dag didn't answer.
He stood up, put on his gloves, and walked out of the café without paying.
The bell over the door rang behind him.
The woman with the coffee pot sighed and wrote it on a tab.
"He's had a tab since 1979," she told me. "First time he hasn't paid it."
We went on Saturday.
Jodie kept Ingrid.
Before we left, I went to the hall closet and took out a garment bag.
Jodie had brought it back from Fargo two weeks before, when she went up to put the salon on the market.
She'd unzipped it in the kitchen, held it up, and said, "Honey, why do you own a giant old man's coat?"
I'd told her why.
She'd zipped it back up without another word.
Erik saw the bag over my arm.
He didn't ask.
The white farmhouse looked the same on the hill above the harbor.
There were no pickups in the driveway now.
The kitchen was cold.
The long wooden table was bare.
