Chapter 28: The Lake
"Ask the doctor," Erik said.
"I did. She said ask you."
"She did not."
"She said ask Mommy. Mommy said ask you. You're the last one."
Erik looked at me across the truck.
I shrugged.
"She's got you," I said.
The doctor said yes on Tuesday, at clinic, with conditions.
Ten days.
A mask.
Twenty minutes, not one more.
"And she doesn't fall," the doctor said, looking right at Erik. "Not once. Her platelets are still low. If she falls, I'll know, and I'll find you."
"She won't fall."
"Mr. Haugland, I've seen you play."
"She won't fall," Erik said again, "because I won't let go."
The first Sunday in March was blue and cold and still.
Lake Harriet was a white sheet behind the house, with a cleared rink on it the size of a living room.
Erik had cleared it himself at six in the morning with a shovel and a snowblower.
He hadn't been alone.
When I came out on the porch with Ingrid in her snowsuit, the whole Voyageurs roster was standing on the ice in their own skates.
Twenty-three hockey players.
Their hair had grown back in soft and short, all at the same length.
