Chapter 30: Seven
Nobody in the exam room said anything.
Then Ingrid swallowed her bite of granola bar.
"Clear like the lake?"
The doctor considered this.
"Clearer," she said.
Erik sat down on the little rolling stool.
It rolled backward into the wall.
He didn't notice.
He had his hands over his face.
I went to the exam table and put my arms around my daughter and held on.
She let me for about four seconds.
"Mommy. You're squishing."
"I'm allowed."
"Is Daddy crying?"
"Daddy's crying."
"Again?"
"Again," Erik said through his hands.
The doctor did something I'd never seen her do in four months.
She sat down on the edge of the exam table next to Ingrid and put an arm around her shoulders.
"I want a picture of you at your wedding," she said to me. "For my wall. I have a whole wall."
"How did you know about the wedding?"
The doctor pointed at Ingrid.
Ingrid shrugged.
"Everybody asks me things," she said.
Ingrid ran the wedding.
Nobody decided this.
It just happened.
She sat at the kitchen table that night in her HAUGLAND jersey with a pad of paper and Jodie's good marker and called a meeting.
