Chapter 19: June's Kitchen

Greer's POV

On day seventy-eight I went to June's kitchen at seven in the morning, before Darren was awake.

I knocked, which I hadn't done on Sunday.

June opened the door in her scrubs, with a piece of toast in her mouth, and she took it out slowly.

"Well," she said. "Look what the cat dragged out of a camel coat."

"Can I come in?"

"Is Asa dead?"

"No."

"Then yes."

I sat at her table, the same scarred oak table where I'd eaten a hundred suppers before Benji died.

She put a mug in front of me and stayed standing, with her arms folded.

"Talk," she said.

I told her all of it.

I told her what I'd said to Benji at the dock, and what I'd answered when he called, and what Asa said over my bed.

I told her about the eight cards in the tin, the ninth one Asa had kept, and the policy in Darren's study, and the recording on my phone from the dinner table.

I did not leave out the hand.

I said it flat, in order, with my eyes on the grain of the wood, and she didn't interrupt once.

When I finished, she was white around the mouth.

"Nine times," she said.

"Yes."

"I set that hand. Eight times, at two in the morning, with him gray in the face and swearing he was fine. I've held the X-rays up to the light, Greer. I know every one of those breaks by heart."

"I know."

"Do you?" Her voice shook. "He wouldn't let me report you. I wanted to. I said, I'll go to the sheriff, and he said she doesn't know. And I thought, then somebody has to make her know, and nobody would."
