Chapter 23: Meadow Rules

On day ninety she took me to Benji's grave.

I had been there nine times in nine cycles, always alone, always at dusk, always after she had broken my hand and forgotten it.

I had never gone with her.

It was on the hill behind the Methodist church, under an oak, a small gray stone with a lamb on it.

She had brought a trowel and a flat of white pansies from the nursery.

She knelt in the grass in her work jeans and began to dig.

I knelt on the other side with my left hand.

"He liked these," she said. "He said they had faces."

"He told me they looked cross."

"They do." She tamped the soil down. "In eight cycles I came here once a season, and never knew why I turned round at the gate."

"You were told to keep away."

"I was told what to feel at a grave." She sat back on her heels. "I'll have to answer for that, too."

"You're not on trial, Greer."

"No." She stared at the stone.

Then she said, "Do you have it?"

I took the drawing out of my shirt pocket and unfolded it on the grass between us.

She didn't touch it.

She looked at the crayon figures, the green field, the yellow dots, and the three names in uphill letters.

"I wrote on the back," she said.

"I read it."

"I thought if I put it where the light goes, I'd never lose it. And then I lost everything else." Her mouth shook. "I wanted you to find it. I couldn't give it to you. I didn't know how to put it in your hand."
