Chapter 24: The Right Hand
We stood in the fireflies until midnight, and she didn't let go of my hand.
Nobody spoke.
The sparks came up out of the grass in waves, and drifted over the water, and the whole lake was ringed with them.
I had seen this night eight times.
I had never seen it with her still holding my hand at the end.
At the stroke of twelve, the phone shivered in my pocket.
"It's today," I said.
"What does it say?"
"The number's gone. It says zero."
"Day ninety-one is the day I always lose you."
"Then watch me not do it."
She nodded slowly.
"Then it's day ninety-one," she said, "and I'm still here."
"You are."
"Do you know what I remember?"
"Tell me."
"All of it." She said it fiercely, in a rush. "The cold coffee, and the cards, and the dock. You with the left hand and the chin you gave him. A hundred little things I can't even number, and every one of them is still mine."
"Greer."
"Sit down, Asa."
I sat on the grass, because her voice left no room for anything else.
She knelt in front of me in the fireflies.
She took my right wrist in both hands, very carefully, and she began to undo the brace.
It had three straps, and she did them one at a time, with her gardener's fingers, not hurrying.
