Chapter 22: The Clause
The king ordered the tables cleared of meat and the doors left open.
He wanted the city to hear what came next.
By the time Tobin and I stood below the dais again, the crowd inside had doubled and the courtyard beyond was packed to the walls.
Corradin walked to the middle of the floor.
His wrists were wrapped in two strips torn from a servant's apron.
He carried a sheet of paper folded small.
For a moment I thought he would read from it, as he had read everything else.
He unfolded it.
He looked at the page.
Then he tore it in half, and in half again, and let the pieces fall.
"I have no speech," Corradin said. "I will say it plainly."
He lifted his head and looked at the crowd, at one face after another, slowly.
"I came into this hall and called the princess of Altavere a field."
"I insulted her, and her husband, and every soldier of Greywatch, to your faces."
"All of it was a lie, and I told it on purpose."
A rustle went through the lords.
Corradin did not look at the floor.
"I will not give you my reasons. They are mine, and they matter less than the damage."
