Chapter 5: The Gate
Dane stood in front of Highmoor's iron gate with forty Ashfall wolves behind him, and he smiled when he saw me.
It was the same smile he used on the Stone.
I stopped on the wall steps above him, with Caelen one step down and to the left of me.
Harlan was at my back.
Ilsa had come out of the hall in her camel coat and now stood at my right hand, her fingers tucked through my arm.
"You don't have to talk to him," she murmured. "Say the word and I'll walk you inside."
"Wyn," Dane called. "Thank God. I've been up all night."
"You rejected me," I said.
"I know."
"In front of everyone."
"I know. I made a mistake."
The Ashfall wolves shifted their feet.
Some of them wouldn't look at me.
I recognized the baker, the pack healer and two of the men who'd played poker in the pack house kitchen every Thursday.
"I thought I was doing what the pack needed," Dane said, and his voice cracked in just the right place. "I was scared. I'd been listening to the elders for months about a Luna who could fight. I let them get in my head."
"Months," I said.
"Please, Wyn. Come home. We'll do it right this time."
He held out his hand through the bars of the gate, palm up.
"One minute. Hold my hand and you'll see I mean it."
My own hand went cold, down at my side.
For six years I had taken that hand every time, and I could feel my fingers wanting to move.
Then I thought about the Stone.
I thought about two hundred people watching me say the words.
