Chapter 20: The File
I didn't sleep that night either.
I sat on the hotel carpet with the canvas bag open and read every page.
Two years of his life.
Photos of the burned truck in the quarry.
A list of every gas station on Highway 1 between Daly City and Half Moon Bay, each one crossed off in red.
A list of every hit-and-run in four states with a stolen pickup, every one crossed off but mine.
A newspaper clipping with my face on it, soft at the folds from being handled.
At six in the morning I packed it all back in the bag in the same order.
At eight I carried it into the police station on Bryant Street by myself.
The detective from Seattle met me at the front desk.
He was still in yesterday's grey suit, and he'd been up all night too.
He took me to a small room with a table and two chairs and a box of tissues nobody had touched.
I put the bag on the table.
I wrote on my pad and turned it to him.
Everything on the man who hit me. My husband collected it for two years. He gave it to me last night.
