Chapter 8: Friday

I didn't nod.

I didn't shake my head.

I just looked at him through the bars.

Porter smiled.

"Nine a.m.," he said. "King County. Go see for yourself."

He got in the car.

Allegra blew me a kiss out the window as they pulled away.

The garden stayed quiet until the engine faded down the hill.

Then Gran stood up on the steps and signed, big enough for the whole staff to see.

Somebody get that rug beaten. Show's over.

Upstairs in his study, Leland shut the door and dropped the cane on the couch.

"He knows who's picking him up," he said. "Which means he knows who hired him."

I wrote on the notepad.

Or he's guessing, to scare me.

"Did it work?"

I thought about it.

I wrote: Yes.

He crouched in front of my chair so his eyes were level with mine.

"You don't have to go."

I wrote: He looked at my face through a windshield and drove into me. I'm going to look at his.

We flew up Thursday night on the last flight.

Gran told the uncle that Leland had a migraine and had taken his pills and wouldn't be out of bed till Saturday.

She told it with such a sad face that I almost believed it.

By eight on Friday we were in a rented grey sedan across the street from the jail.
