Nobody in the bar said a word.
The church women stopped criticizing the paint.
The mailman stayed in the doorway with the cold coming in around him.
Santino sanded with his back to all of them, slow and even, with the grain.
The old man in the flat cap got off his stool.
He walked down the bar, leaning on it, until he was standing next to Santino.
He looked at the hands for a long time.
"Fire?" he said.
"Fire," Santino said.
The old man nodded.
He picked up a second sanding block off the bar and started on the stretch next to him.
"You're doing it wrong," he said. "Too much wrist."
"I read about it."
"Well, you read it wrong."
The church women went back to the paint.
The mailman came in and shut the door.
Mandy walked over with her clipboard, took Santino's left hand without asking and turned it over in the window light.
"You've been using the cream," she said.
"Every night."
"Good." She gave it back to him. "You're still on grout."
