Chapter 22: Norma's Kitchen
My mother came home on Tuesday afternoon, in her sister's Buick, with a pillow strapped to her chest.
I had been back in the flat for two days.
I had washed every dish and aired every room.
On Monday I had walked into the diner on Ferry Street and asked for my old shift.
The owner had stared at me.
So had the cook, and the two regulars at the counter, and a delivery boy in the back.
"Hostetter," the owner said. "You're the girl who shot Carmine Brusco's hand off."
"Two fingers," I said. "Can I have Thursday?"
He gave me Thursday and a free piece of pie.
Now I stood in my mother's kitchen with the kettle on.
She lowered herself into her chair at the little table with a wince.
"Don't hover," she said.
"I'm not hovering."
"You're hovering with a teapot."
I sat.
She looked around at the yellow wallpaper, the cracked sugar bowl, the clock shaped like a rooster.
"I thought I'd never see this room again," she said.
"I know."
"I'd like to tell you something."
She reached for the old tea tin on the counter, the one with the faded roses that had held tea bags my whole life.
