The long dining room had twenty-one place cards, and the first one on the right of the head chair said Norma Hostetter.
The head chair itself had a card that said Janelle.
I stood in the doorway in my plain navy waitress dress, because I wanted to, and read it three times.
Rosa came out of the kitchen in a red apron, carrying a platter of braciole, and kicked me gently in the shin.
"Go sit, babe. You're letting the heat out."
Benny stood at the sideboard in a cardigan, pouring wine with the care of a man defusing something.
My mother sat at the far end of the table, in her pink cardigan, with a blanket over her knees and her chin up.
She was looking at the portrait of Salvatore Ferrante on the wall.
"It's a very large nose," she said, to nobody.
"Mom."
"I'm only saying."
Luciano came down the stairs in a black suit with the collar open.
He saw me in the doorway, and the whole hard shape of his face changed.
He didn't say anything.
He pulled out the head chair, the one that had been his for three years, and held it for me.
I sat in it.
He took the seat at my left.
Fourteen more people filled in around us, captains and wives, the two cousins, the old women from Rosa's church.
The Marchetti girl came with her father in his wheelchair.
Old Marchetti took the place beside my mother.
The two of them looked at each other, and by the soup they were arguing about the school board.
