Chapter 9: Wednesday Dinner
Rosa had set the table for twenty, and every place had a small white card.
Mine said Janelle Hostetter, and it sat at the right hand of the head chair, where it had sat all week.
Tonight somebody had taken it out.
In its place, in neat black ink, a new card read Miss Marchetti.
I stood at the end of the dining room in the black dress and looked at it.
Behind me, eighteen guests were taking their seats, captains and their wives, two cousins, old Marchetti in a wheelchair with a blanket over his knees.
The Marchetti girl stood at his shoulder in her white dress, staring at the carpet.
Brusco leaned in the doorway with his cigar, watching me.
"Is there a problem, Miss Hostetter?" he said, loud enough for the whole table.
"No problem."
"Take the seat by the kitchen. We've put you down there. Better view of the help."
A few people laughed.
I looked down the long table to the head chair, where Luciano sat with his hands folded and his face carved from stone.
He was waiting.
He didn't say a word to save me.
He let me choose.
That was what I understood in that second, standing there with my heart going hard.
He would never take my seat back for me.
He would only watch what I did with it.
I walked the length of the room.
Thirty feet of polished wood, and every eye followed me.
I stopped at the head of the table beside his chair.
"Luciano," I said.
"Janelle."
I lifted my skirt an inch, and I sat down on his lap.
