Chapter 18: Moving Day
On Friday I took the first bus again, and I got to Orchard Road at six, when the lawn was white with frost.
Julian was in his room, folding a plaid blanket into a suitcase.
He had one suitcase, a gray duffel, and a cardboard box of school books.
That was everything he owned that still belonged to him.
"You don't have to be here," he said.
"I know."
"It's going to be ugly."
"Then you need someone who's good at ugly."
He smiled without lifting his head.
At seven, a white truck turned in at the gate, with HARGROVE GROUP painted on the door in green letters.
Two men in work gloves got out, and a third man with a clipboard.
They walked up to the front steps.
Julian and I stood on the porch.
"Morning," said the man with the clipboard.
He had a tired kind face and a mustache, and he did not look like a villain.
"I'm sorry about this, son. We've been told to clear the house by eight."
"By eight?" I said.
"Those are my orders, miss."
"May I see your orders?"
He hesitated, and then he held out the sheet.
