Chapter 20: Debate
By Monday morning, I had slept four hours in two nights.
Ruby and Julian and my brother had made me a breakfast of toast cut into the shape of a gavel.
My mother pinned the thrifted navy blazer straight on my shoulders, and she stood back and looked at me for a long moment.
"You look like a president," she said.
"I look like a girl with a mended cuff."
"That's what a president looks like, honey. Somebody who mends."
The auditorium was full.
It held four hundred students, the whole faculty in a row at the side, and a dozen parents who had heard about the pep rally and come to see.
In the third row sat a woman in a gray wool suit I did not know, with white hair and a very straight back, who watched everyone without writing anything down.
Presley's father sat in the front, alone, with his hands folded over the head of his cane.
The stage had two podiums, two glasses of water, and a table in the middle for the headmaster, who looked as though he had not slept either.
