Chapter 6: Co-Chairs

Being co-chair with Julian Whitcombe meant sitting next to him.

The headmaster had put two chairs side by side at the head of the council table, with a plaque in front of each.

Mine said CO-CHAIR in gold letters, and it was the only gold thing I owned.

"Don't get used to the view," Presley whispered, passing behind me.

I ignored her and opened my notebook.

The first item on the Founders' Day agenda was the main event.

Presley had a slide ready, which tells you how long she had been planning this.

"A Centennial Gala," she said, clicking to a picture of a ballroom full of candles.

"Two hundred twenty dollars a plate, black tie, in the Whitcombe Hall dining room."

"We'll raise thirty-three thousand dollars for the Annual Fund."

The room made impressed noises.

"What about the Founders' Day lunch?" I asked.

"We're replacing it."

"The lunch is for the families. It's been free every year since 1950."

"It's cheap," Presley said. "And it's messy. And it's, frankly, not the image the school wants to project in its hundredth year."

I did not raise my voice.

I opened my notebook to a page I had prepared the night before, while my brother snored on the other side of the room.

"There are three hundred and forty families in this school," I said.

"So?"

"Two hundred of them pay full tuition and will come to your gala."

"A hundred and forty don't. Those are the scholarship families, the cooks, and the groundskeepers."

"They've kept this place running for a hundred years."

"They can buy a ticket."

"At two hundred twenty dollars? The woman who runs our laundry earns fourteen dollars an hour. Her daughter is a sophomore here."
