Chapter 14: His Own Women
I went down the ladder so fast I missed the last rung.
Krista was already in the barn door in her pajamas and a parka, holding a clipboard she must have slept with.
"Don't panic," she said. "I've started a list."
The woman at the front of the line was Gran's friend.
The Yardley elder who'd read my deed at Sunday supper, in a wool coat and rubber boots wet to the knee.
She held out a thermos.
"Coffee," she said. "You'll need it."
"What are you all doing here?"
"Same thing you are, dear. Getting warm."
She pulled her scarf down.
On her neck was a fated mark, ringed silver, thirty years old.
Her mate had died the winter I was born.
"Not me," she said. "I keep mine. I came to hold their hands."
Behind her the line ran all the way down to the water.
Women in their forties and fifties with old plain bites they'd hidden for years.
Two sisters holding hands.
A mother with her grown daughter, who was twenty-two and hadn't woken yet and wouldn't meet anybody's eye.
