"Fine," I said.
I said it loud enough for the back row.
Then I turned my back on the Council and knelt down in the moonwort.
Krista had my kit open before my knees touched the ground.
Gran's machine. Fresh needles. The silver dust and the cedar ash in their jars.
Gran's flower shears.
I cut the moonwort right there, inside the stone border, under the full moon, with six hundred wolves watching me do it.
I crushed it in Gran's old mortar until the juice ran.
My hands were steady.
I don't know how.
Addison was burning now for real.
Not the warm-up.
The coal-in-the-throat heat I remembered, coming off her in waves I could feel from a foot away.
Her wolf was clawing so hard I could see her ribs jump under the flannel.
"Addie," I said. "Look at me."
Her gray eyes found mine.
"Yes or no?"
She actually laughed.
"You stole that from him."
"Yes or no."
"Yes," she said. "Yes. My neck, my vote. Go."
Krista unbuttoned the top of her flannel and folded it back, just enough to bare the skin over her heart.
