Chapter 6: Trespass

"I know that plant," I said.

Roark crouched beside me on the cellar floor.

"How?"

"Gran used to take me to the clearing in summer, when nobody was using it. There's a strip along the east edge with an old stone border. She'd kneel there for hours and pick little white flowers with seven petals."

"Like the one on the page."

"Exactly like the one on the page."

I'd thought she was just gardening.

I'd sat on the stones eating a peanut butter sandwich and watched her do it.

"We go tomorrow night," I said.

"We?"

"You think I'm letting you sneak onto Kyler's land alone? You promised me no war."

"Walking onto his land is how wars start."

"Then don't get caught."

He looked at me for a long time.

"You're a terrible influence," he said.

"I've been told."

The next night there were no clouds, and the moon was a few days past full and bright as a streetlight.

We crossed the Larch a mile upstream, where it ran shallow over flat rocks.

Roark went first.

He held out his hand on the slippery stones, and I took it, and neither of us let go on the far bank.

The Yardley woods were dead quiet.

I knew every trail.

I'd walked them for four years holding Kyler's hand.

Now I was walking them in black jeans with a canvas bag and a pair of Gran's flower shears in my pocket.

The clearing opened up under the moon, wide and silver.

The fire pit in the middle was still black with ash.

Somewhere in it was a melted silver wolf pendant.

I didn't look.

The stone border was right where I remembered, half sunk in the grass along the east edge.

And inside it, the moonwort was blooming.
