Chapter 22: Caught on Camera

On Thursday evening Bowen split his left palm open on a guardrail bolt and came to the county ER to get it stitched.

Nathan drove him.

The waiting room was packed with a Thursday night's worth of coughs and sprained ankles, and Bowen sat on a plastic chair holding a wad of gauze.

"It's nothing," he said.

"It's six stitches."

"It's five."

Dell came out of triage in her navy scrubs and gave them both a look.

"Next time use a glove," she said. "Come on. Back room."

She had one hand on Bowen's elbow when the automatic doors opened.

Britt walked in.

She was holding her left wrist against her chest.

Her face was blotchy and wet, and she was sobbing as she came.

She saw Nathan and her whole body shook.

"Him!" she cried, and the waiting room turned.

"Britt," Dell said.

"It was him! He grabbed me in the parking lot. He twisted my arm and he said he'd finish it!" She held up the wrist. It had already begun to swell, a hard dark purple from the palm to the bone. "Somebody call the police. Somebody, please."

A woman by the vending machine put her hand to her mouth.

An old man rose halfway out of his chair.

Nathan did not move.

He had been in this ER for forty minutes and had not stepped outside once.

"I've been here since half past five," he said. "Ask anyone."

"He's lying!"

"I'm calling the deputy," the triage clerk said, already picking up the phone.

"Good," Dell said. "Call her. And bring me the tablet."

A big security guard in a navy jacket came through the side door with a tablet under his arm.

"Ma'am, will you sit down?" Dell said to Britt.
