Chapter 8: Tuesday

"We don't need to talk," I said.

I kept my keys in my fist with one sticking out between my fingers, the way my mother taught me.

Colt pushed off the truck and took one step closer.

"Come on," he said. "You've had your fun. You made your video."

"It wasn't for fun."

"Leanne." He dropped his voice to the tone that used to make me melt. "You know what's good for you. The house is too big for one person. Sign it over to me, and I'll put you back on the list."

I stared at him.

"The list," I said.

"For when Trista has the baby and we're all settled. A man needs a wife who's loyal." His eyes flicked over my hotel apron. "You'd be taken care of."

"You want me to be your second wife."

"I want you to stop acting crazy."

I slapped him.

I slapped him as hard as I have ever hit anything, and the sound bounced off the concrete pillars.

His head snapped sideways.

For one second he just stood there with a red handprint rising on his cheek.

Then his face changed.

He grabbed my wrist and twisted it up behind my back, hard, and pain shot through my shoulder.

"You little bitch," he said, close to my ear. "I gave you everything."

"Let go," I said through my teeth.

"You think that carpenter's going to save you?" he said. "Gault. Like the billboards. Cute name for a guy with a ladder."

The elevator dinged.

Tobin stepped out of it carrying a paper lunch bag.

He saw us, and his face went completely flat.

He didn't run.

He crossed the garage at a walk, set the lunch bag on the hood of my Corolla, and took hold of Colt's wrist.
