Chapter 7: The Strays
"The Ladder," I said. "What's the Ladder?"
Wanda pointed her cigarette at the ridge.
"See that notch under the Moon Stone? Like somebody took a bite out of the rock?"
I squinted. "Barely."
"It's a chimney. Two hundred feet of cracked granite, straight up, narrow as a phone booth. A woman can get her hands and feet into it." She tapped ash. "A wolf can't. No thumbs."
"So the founding Luna climbed it."
"She climbed it while the Alpha's wolf ran the long way round. Two miles of switchbacks. She beat him to the stone by a minute."
"And you know the way to it."
"I know the way to everything." She started the four-wheeler. "Run the loop every day this week. Then we'll talk about rock."
She drove away before I could thank her.
Granger called down from the porch. "That's a yes, by the way."
"It didn't sound like a yes."
"That's what her yes sounds like."
On Thursday, Jagger posted a new order on the dining hall door.
No rations for any warrior who can't stand a patrol shift.
By Friday night, they were at my barn.
The one-eyed warrior and the kid with the burned arm were already living in my stalls.
The gray-haired warrior with the pinned ankle came limping down the road with his wife's lunch bag and nothing in it.
Behind him came the omega twins.
They were twenty, two skinny girls with the same freckles and the same chopped hair.
During the war they'd carried water to the front line.
One had a broken collarbone that nobody had set.
The other had stitches in her scalp gone green.
"They said you'd look at us," the first twin said. "We can't pay."
"Nobody pays here," I said. "Sit down on that hay bale and take off your shirt."
