Chapter 8: The Hearing
I took the paper out of the Gamma's hand and read it by his flashlight.
"Pack property," I said. "Says who?"
"Says the Alpha."
Behind me, Granger's chair creaked in the dark.
"Ask him to show you the land book," Granger said. "Page one hundred and six."
The Gamma looked at him for a long time.
"I'll tell him you said so," he said, and left.
"What's on page one hundred and six?" I asked Granger later.
"My father's handwriting."
On Monday the Elder hears disputes in the Great Hall.
Anyone can bring one.
Most weeks it's two men and a fence line.
That Monday, the hall was full by ten.
I walked in carrying the land book from the library glass case.
It weighed as much as a toddler and it left dust all down the front of my shirt.
The strays came in behind me and stood along the back wall.
The twins came, and the one-eyed warrior, and the kid with the burned arm.
The gray-haired warrior leaned on his cane by the door.
Granger came last, wheeling himself.
People moved out of his way faster than they had at my wedding.
Jagger sat beside the Elder at the head table with Shayla on his other side.
He looked amused, smugly waiting for a punchline.
"The wolfless nurse has a complaint," he said. "Go ahead."
I put the land book on the table in front of the Elder and opened it to the ribbon.
Page one hundred and six.
"The barn below the Lodge," I said. "And the cabin, and the ground between them. Read it out loud, please."
The Elder put on his glasses.
"To my firstborn son, Granger, on the night of his first shift," he read. "The cabin below the Lodge, the barn behind it, and every foot of ground between. His by blood, not by rank."
